Emotional Intelligence lessons
👨👩👧👦I conducted an Emotional Intelligence class last week. My 2 biggest passions are helping emerging leaders become the best leaders and emotional Intelligence. This class hit the mark for me!🚀
It always amazes me when I see emerging leaders so attuned to emotional Intelligence and how it plays a role in their career. I had not met anyone that had actually taken a class or done an assessment—until the last 2 years. I love hearing emerging leaders talk about what they think is a good leader AND what their take is on a bad leader.
😥I asked my class to give me an example of a bad leader. Since they are newer in the workforce, I said a leader can be anyone from a baseball coach to your own parents. Any time I ask anyone that question, they can immediately envision the traits of a bad leader:
Poor or unclear communication
Creating fear
Taking credit for others’ work
Bad decisions
Blaming others
The second question is: Would you leave a job because of the above traits? One of the attendees said that he did. It was his first job out of college and had a manager (who was in another state) that exhibited the above traits. He said he liked the job, and it was within his education but said that he would NOT continue to be treated in that way.
🤦♂️Huh. I don’t know about you, but when I was younger, I had a boss that was the same but added that he had whiskey in his coffee every morning! I don’t think I was aware enough in my early 20’s to quit a manager like that. I hated going to work but I needed the experience and resume.
My point is today’s employees are more aware and want to work for a boss that will:
Mentor
Share credit
Show empathy
Own their mistakes
Treat everyone with kindness and respect
Have you ever thought about YOUR emotional intelligence and if there is something there that needs attention?
Leave a comment if you would like more information or have a discussion. Like I said, Emotional Intelligence is one of my passions.
